The United Nations (UN) is one of the leading employer worldwide where many Jobs and Internship seekers have been employed both directly and indirectly through the different programs which are spear headed by the UN and its sister bodies and organizations which include but not limited to UNDP, UNWomen, UNHSP, UNHabitat, UNV, UNGC and the very many others which you may happen to be knowing. The UN to many is the better employer and who anyone who meets the required qualifications would want to work for due to the associated benefits for example the possibility of working in a different country, the salary and other related benefits and so many others as they vary from one person to person.
And as seen in the above paragraph, there are so many others out there who have constant dreams of being employed with the United Nations although one of the problems which many face is when it comes to getting started from searching for the available openings and opportunities, applying and being recruited. And in this article, I will take you through the different steps and procedures which when followed, at least one will be able to know the necessary starting point which will act as a guide through out the searching and application process.
Whether you are looking for an Internship, a Career or a Job opportunity with the UN and or its sister organizations as seen above, below are some of the steps which can help you in getting started.
1. Know Which Body Exactly You Want To Work With – By this I am referring to the exact UN body or organization you want to work for. It so happens that the different people would want to work for different UN bodies for example UNWomen, UNESCO and others. Having this in mind helps you in getting started and focusing on those Jobs which are available in your preferred choice of work.
2. Make Research – This is a step which involves researching thoroughly about your preference in above as in the kind of Jobs they tend to have, the required qualifications, the experience if required and so many others. You can do that by checking at the different past and current openings which you can get by accessing some of the UN careers website like the www.unjobs.org, jobs.undp.org, www.reliefweb.int and many others which you can search for using the different criteria.
3. Create An Account – In many cases, most of the UN Job openings are applied for online and where by in order to do it, some of the portals require one to have an account which can be created free although there are others like the UNDP Jobs portal which require no account despite of the fact that applications are submitted online. An account at the same time will help you to receive Job alerts depending on your preferences set and which can too help you to staying aware of any open vacancies. Additionally, an account will help you to keep all of your documents as required online and which means a single click when it comes to applying without additional uploads, printings and photocopying.
4. Apply IN Time – While it is known that a deadline is always specified on most Job openings, not waiting for the last minute to submit your application is a good step since taking enough time and reading through everything before you submit your documents can help you to avoid any possible errors which may impact you negatively.
The next time you consider searching and applying for a United Nations employment opportunity, take note of the above and try out your lack.
