Our latest technological inventions might seem unreal to the persons living a century before – if somehow they could see it. When PC first came into existence, it was such a giant and complex array of hardware that covered almost an entire room. The technology was further developed, and we embraced laptops, though the reduction in the usage of PCs at this level wasn’t significant.
We further developed smartphones and tablets which are so small in size and so convenient to use that few people think, in some years PCs would be entirely replaced by smartphones. The fundamental reason is the ubiquitous nature of mobile phones – you can carry them anywhere you want, even at places where a laptop is impractical to carry. There are many ways that suggest that smartphones are taking over desktops day by day.
The Convenience of Smartphones
It cannot be denied that PCs provide an outstanding experience with their large screens and keyboards which make office work easy. But, in modern days, not all work is office-based. Even if you work in an international firm’s office, you will have to go on business trips in spite of your office-natured work because these companies want you to have international exposure. In these cases, you cannot carry your desktop with you. You can either switch to mobile phones or laptops.
The laptop is also impractical to carry in some situations in which you have to move constantly from one place to another. One such example is of media reporters. These situations demand that you have something with you 24 hours, and that could easily be adjusted in your pocket. The answer is your mobile phone. You can write emails, correspond to your clients, and you can remain in touch with your family members only with the help of a cell phone.
Another problem worth considering in PCs is the connectivity to the internet. Though not always, sometimes PCs face difficulty in internet connections either because of Ethernet wires or because of Wi-Fi. Even if you are carrying your laptop with you, you may go to places where you won’t find any Wi-Fi, and obviously, most of your correspondence requires an internet connection.
This is not the case with smartphones. Due to the development of 3G and 4G technologies, you can access the internet on your cell phone anywhere you go except far off lands. The comfort that one feels in carrying mobile phones – as contrasted with the laptops which are a little difficult to carry because obviously, you will have to use a bag – make these the priority of people who are always moving from one place to another.
What Smartphones Can Do
The invention of only simple mobile phones at the beginning revolutionized the world because people from all around the world felt like living in a single village. However, no one, at that point, thought about the competence that was imminent among computers and mobile phones. Later, the invention of smartphones and the ease and comfort with which they are used changed the way people worked. More than half of searches on search engines are done on mobile phones. Almost two-thirds of people in the whole world – which use the internet at all – access the internet with the help of smartphones. This is not only because of the comfort that usage of smartphones entails but the features it offers.
Nowadays smartphones can do almost everything, no matter what and the app industry is so developed that if you think about something, the app resembling it is already made. You don’t need to use the desktop to access documents anymore; you can do it with the help of your cell phone. Even in some ways, your smartphone can perform far better than that; for example, completing reports, recording audios or videos, taking photos, and sending screenshots.
It is being argued by many experts that in the future even though PCs wouldn’t become completely obsolete; the usage of smartphones will increase to its maximum. While others who go on an extreme level argue, the PCs will entirely be replaced by smartphones. This viewpoint led many computer companies to redesign their PCs or Laptops. However, we can only wait and watch who among smartphones and PCs win the race.
