Applying and having a drivers license in Australia just like it is in all other world countries is mandatory for anyone is willing, and ready to drive. And in order to obtain one, one has to go through all of the three different steps as required by the laws right from applying and getting a learners, a provisional and full driving permit depending on the Territory where one is trying to get the driving licence from.

The Road transport authority in the Australian capital territory, Geared in the New South Wales, Department of transport in the Northern Territory, the department of transport and main roads in Queensland, the department of planning, transport and infrastructure in the South, the department of State growth in Tasmania, Vicroads in Victoria and the department of Transport in the Western are the Government bodies which take on the responsibility and task of issuing and giving drivers license in Australia.

Like I shared in the first paragraphs of this post, the journey to obtaining your drivers license in Australia begins in the territory where you live. And it is where you should get started by processing and obtaining a Learners driving permit. For example, getting a learner permit from ACT and by the Road Transport Authority requires one to least be 15 years and 9 months old, in addition to having successfully completed a Road Ready Learner Licence Course, including a computerized knowledge test on the ACT Road Rules.

Additionally, learner permit holders must have;

1. Successfully complete an eye test.
2. Provide passed ACT Road Rules Knowledge Test certificate.
3. Supply full Proof of Identity.
4. Display “L” plates at the front and rear of the vehicle.
5. Ensure that a person holding a full Australian Driver Licence occupies the seat next to the Learner.
6. Have a blood or breath alcohol concentration of zero when driving or riding.
7. Not tow a trailer exceeding 750kg GVM.
8. Not exceed posted speed limits.

Important things to note : The drivers license application procedures may differ for those who already hold a foreign DP. And in such cases, one may be allowed to drive for up to 3 months on the Australian roads and later be subject to a test for permit exchange.
