How Do You Become A Foster Carer In The UK?
If you want to become a foster care, then you have to take an assessment under the UK Fostering Services Regulations 2002. This regulation prescribes the statutory framework for the assessment of all the foster carers in the UK. There are several requirements that foster carers are required to fulfill as per the regulation and the assessment. These requirements include, information about the applicant and other members of the family. The applicant shall also be required to take part in an interview process in which several questions related to the job will be asked.
On behalf of that interview, the fostering agencies will prepare a written report in which the fate of the applicant would be mentioned. If all the assessment is good and as per the terms and conditions, then it will fasten the process of fostering approval. If the assessment report is completed in a satisfactory manner, then the report would be shared with the applicant, just to make sure it is accurate and fair.
The report will also be presented to the Fostering panel by the social worker who handles all the work with the applicants. The entire panel is held at the Fostering Agency office, which consists of a foster carer, social workers and many independent and professional people of the society. The applicants will be invited to attend the meeting as well.
It will take an hour or so to conclude the entire process of the panel, but it all depends upon the recommendation of the approval. The applicants who were considered the approved foster carers will be registered with the fostering agency within a matter of a few days. After they get registered, they will be able to start their fostering career.
There is a special section called the Schedule 3 of the Fostering Services Regulations, under which all the information required for the assessment of the prospective foster carers has to be gathered. The Fostering Agency social worker will arrange to initiate the assessment, which will be followed by the initial visit and the decision to proceed.
The social worker who is assessed will pay visit a dozen times as per the rules of the assessment. The referees or other relevant people can also visit the home, so the prospective foster carer has to be alert at all the times.
The foster carers are more likely to show the development in the following skills by the end of the assessment. These skills include the following below.
Study at home is one of the most enjoyable experience, however, it can be a lot more demanding at times. The assessment report will include the foster carer’s full name, address and date of birth. It will also have all the details of his/her health, which has to be supported by a medical report.
