April 20th was the new date as announced by Twitter’s CEO, Elon Musk. On the same day, many prominent figures including entertainers, journalists to company workers started losing their Twitter Blue Legacy check marks aka the verified icon.
In Uganda, Daniel Lutaaya, an award-winning Investigative journalist who doubles as the Managing Director of @News247Ug wrote this “Hey world. I just lost my blue tick. But this is still my official account”. By post time, other affected accounts included that of the Fisrt son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, @URAuganda, etc.
Several high-profile users including celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Justin Beiber, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Rachel Maddow laos had by Thursday lost their verification marks.
This decision makes one wonder whether the deactivation if for non-payment, or something related to having obtained the verification mark fraudulently.
It should also be noted that under Elon, verified government Twitter accounts have been given a grey version of the checkmark and verified media outlets a gold tick.
