Order Refund Message Scam

Small business fraud cases continue to exist in 2023 and many have fallen victim as a result of someone pretending to be my/their business message scams.

As a way of scamming businesses, scammers have continued to send text and email messages about the bogus online business opportunities that they claim to have occurred, thus asking you for refunds, etc.

Recently, Scammers set their eyes on my official support email, and send me an email from “[email protected]” that landed in my spam folder using Firefox.  And below were the contents.

$820 Order Refund Message Scam email

Message

Greetings.
This morning I ordered around 820 dollars worth of products through your shop. Right after spending money on the products, some text came out on the page that it was not possible to get cash from my banking card, and the transaction was declined. But when I logged into my bank account, I noticed the fact that did happen. You need to solve this matter and give back the money asap! I am additionally attaching my statement to verify the drawback of the funds. This is my bank statement: https://client–documents-docsbankstatement-web-za.translate.goog/cd331e470d0b93025f4d88a46512cc99?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=auto&_x_tr_pto=wapp

Fraud in the email

  • That is through my shop, one that doesn’t exist on my website
  • That some text came on the page, a page that never exists.
  • That the transaction was declined yet it occurred and was successful from their bank account.
  • That I needed to solve the matter and push a refund urgently.
  • That I should click on the link to view the statement

Clicking on the link sent from email address “[email protected]” redirects you to a Google Drive page that doesn’t allow viewing of the said excel document. Instead, you are given an option to download the file, a thing that is very suspicious based on the fact that it could be malware intended to harm your computer.

How to get a scammer in trouble

  • Don’t open links in scam spam-marked and filtered emails messages
  • Ignore such emails if you believe you aren’t associated with any online store or shop
  • Always report such emails using the report feature in your email provider.
  • Always share such phishing-related materials with others to make them aware
  • Be vigilant! If you can, seduce the scammer and lure them to meet law enforcement
