URA Uganda New Plates Changes

Effective 20th and 21st December 2016, the Uganda Revenue Authority announced the effected changes in the issuance of Private, ordinary, diplomatic, duty free, tax exemption, personalized, dealers, statutory, consulates and other motor vehicle / cycle number plates for first time registrations in the country.

If you plan to buy a new or import a vehicle / cycle in Uganda, you must read this post since it will help you to know what changes have been introduced and how you are supposed to follow them for example, the introduction of the Front and Back registration plates for motor cycles, and the difference between the Boda boda and other motor cycles.

According to the email message I received personally from URA services as quoted below, these changes are already effective and thus meaning that when you notice a boda boda for example with 2 number plates, you need not to worry. See details below for all changes..

Dear Client,
The Ministry of Works and Transport, on behalf of the Government of Uganda, introduced policy changes that affect the registration of motor cycles in Uganda. Accordingly, the following changes have been implemented and are effective from 20th December 2016.
All motor cycles will be assigned 2 rectangular shaped number plates when they register for the first time i.e. for the front and rear. This replaces the current practice of issuing only one number plate.
Motor cycles for private use will be issued number plates with black characters against a yellow background.
Motor cycles for commercial (Boda-boda) use will be issued number plates with black characters against a white background.
Further to these changes, the issuance of number plate series for motor vehicles has been reviewed and streamlined to a single pool as specified in the Traffic and Road Safety Act. These changes have been effected with effect from 21st December 2016. Below are the details of the changes on motor vehicle registration;
Registration for the first time
All number plate series for ordinary, duty free and statutory categories of motor vehicles shall be issued registration numbers from the same pool.
Personalised and diplomatic categories of motor vehicles will be assigned numbers in the same pool to act as a permanent mark for each vehicle through out its useful life in Uganda.
Re-registration/Boarding off
At the time of re-registration or boarding off of a motor vehicle, Duty free and statutory vehicle categories will maintain the same number with black characters but the background colour of the number plate will be changed to ordinary category.
Similarly, Personalised and diplomatic vehicle categories will be issued the ordinary numbers that were assigned at the time of first registration into Uganda.

Happy Holidays.
